OrthoServiceLine.com Releases “A Buyer’s Guide to Patient-Reported Outcome Collection Tools”

OrthoServiceLine.com, a contemporary online resource to the orthopedic community, today announced the publication of a free e-Book: “A Buyer’s Guide to Orthopedic Patient-Reported Outcome Collection Tools.”

Representatives of all major joint replacement surgeon organizations (AAHKS, AAOS, The Hip Society, The Knee Society) met in August 2015 at a Patient Reported Outcomes Summit to obtain a consensus regarding the patient-reported outcomes and risk variables suitable for total hip and knee arthroplasty performance measures. Leaders of the ortho community continue to promote the benefits of collecting PROs, from improved patient decision-making to benchmarking surgeon performance.

OrthoServiceLine.com’s Joint Replacement Benchmark Report in May 2015 found that only 49% of orthopedic programs were collecting patient-reported functional outcomes pre-surgery, and even less were collecting the data post-surgery. Many hospitals are currently seeking a PRO solution to meet recommendations by the professional societies and requirements set by Medicare in the new Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) bundled payment model.

The e-book walks prospective buyers through the decision process, including recommendations from functional outcome industry experts Kevin J. Bozic, MD, MBA; Nina Whalen, RN, APN-C; and Patricia D. Franklin, MD, MBA, MPH.

Highlights of the e-book include:

  • The importance of collecting functional outcomes
  • How to decide what to measure and when
  • Determining your data needs
  • Differences in reporting capabilities
  • The most important factors in choosing the right solution for you

“Medicare and other payers are clearly moving toward requiring patient-reported outcome data for value-based reimbursement,” said Maeghan Nicholson, Editor of OrthoServiceLine.com. “Orthopedic program leaders are used to measuring their performance in terms of volume, clinical quality, financials and other metrics. Now it’s time for them to track what really matters – what was the patient outcome?”
